A Different Perspective

Do you ever wonder at the childlike glee that comes over that normally calm, mild mannered, well trained husband/boyfriend of yours upon learning of a supposedly undetected, just got permission to hunt site? Well quit wondering ladies and just accept the fact that this is what occurs. I guess you could equate it to us hearing of a 75% off sale at the nearest mall and it actually meant 75% off, not the marked up then marked down sale but the honest to goodness sale!!!! Or maybe that wonderful feeling of finally losing that 10 pounds you have been trying to lose for the last six months.

You would think after 10 years of marriage I would have gotten used to this phenomena, but I am constantly amazed at the lengths my husband will go to for digging in the dirt. His last trip to England for example in the dead of winter to the North Sea really had me scratching my head. Gale force winds, rain sleet, snow, mud, muck, just to dig in the dirt. As it turns out he had better weather than I did here in North Georgia, I ended up with the snow, ice, mud, muck, etc.

When we first met I kind of went along with the detecting to impress him, wasn’t my cup of tea really but I wanted to be nice. Then we got married and of course you don’t have to be nice anymore do you? Nah, just complain about him going detecting, yeah that’s the ticket, if you complain long enough or loud enough he’ll quit, Wrong! Now not wanting to wreck a good thing I decided I best quit complaining and figure out what exactly made this sport interesting. Well, I asked to go with him a few times and he took me out to some places he knew would produce. Smart guy, he knew if I got bored that was it. After the first few silver coins came out I was pretty interested, that is after I figured out what the heck they were anyway. You see there is a whole new language to learn with this hobby and the quicker you learn it the better off you are and the more impressed he is, get it, compromise or give and take, that is the key.

Now I still wasn’t gung ho about this hobby but certainly more tolerant of his detecting trips, and he appreciated the fact that I showed some interest. A few years ago he wanted to go to England detecting for two weeks, I said sure no biggie, time to myself, shopping, and not cooking all appealed to me. Until he got home and then boy was I jealous, you see I was bitten just enough by the detecting bug that when he started showing me all the cool stuff he found my mouth was watering at the prospect of being able to detect in England. So I practiced throughout the next year and when England came round again I got to go also. I did enjoy the detecting and as a side benefit I got to see a part of the world I had never seen before and to experience something that will stay with me the rest of my life. This sport is addictive and fun and given the chance understandable.

I am now entered into the GNRS competition in October, one of the few girls in the competition and hope to do well. The point of this article is for you ladies to gain just a bit of understanding about the hobby and why the guys are so hooked. Who knows maybe with you interest in their hobby they will show some interest in yours, just don’t take them shopping for a swimming suit....While bemoaning the fact that I was (in my opinion) a bit too chunky for a two piece, my darling husband informed me that I wasn’t too chunky for a two piece, just too old......Lesson learned.
