South Carolina Historical Marker for 55th Massachusetts Burial site Project

Background : From Robert E. Bohrn

Have you ever wished a relic that you have dug could just "talk"? I was fortunate enough to find the 19 soldiers of the 55th Massachusetts that was the cover article in the July/August issue of The Treasure Depot magazine. These artifacts we find have more to tell us than we will ever know. With the help of the Treasure Depot, we have a chance to pay back all of those soldiers who gave us the hobby that we all love. Under the auspices of THE TREASURE DEPOT, we are having a South Carolina State historical monument made to mark the spot where the 55th Massachusetts Burial spot was located on Folly Island. I have personally contacted the State of South Carolina Historical Marker Division and have been enthusiasticly granted permission to start the process for getting this monument put in place on Folly Island. I have been working closely with Richard Walker on this project and have been given Larry Cissna's Blessing in forming the sponsership for the marker. The group "Treasure Depot's Friends of the 55TH Massachusetts" will be the sponsers for this project. This group is where the brotherhood of the Depot comes in. The cost for this monument must be privatly donated to have the marker made, and erected. We are seeking any donations to have this marker made. No donation will be too small or too large, This is a chance to show not only the public at large, but the powers that be that relic hunting by responsible individuals really care about our countries history. When the monument is made it will also have cast into it "Donated by Treasure Depot's Friends of the 55th Massachusetts" This will be on both sides of the monument. There will be also be an unvieling ceremony that will give us a chance as relic hunters to show the public who we are and what we are capable of achieving. This will be a very large, and a nationally media event. The total cost for the monument is 1830.00. I know these are hard times an money is tight. But this our chance to do somthing for those that gave the last full measure, and had lain lost and forgotten by their country and time until discovered by relic hunters. All donations should be sent to Richard Walker(PalmettoDigger). See donation info below

Thank You all, and any advice or help in this endevour will be greatly appreciated!

From Richard Walker

We're going to get those boys a marker. Those of you who can, we ask for any donation of any amount you can spare. I wish there was a way to list everyone who contributes on the marker when it is cast. Each of you will have earned that spot. However, due to space, it will simply be credited to the "Treasure Depot, Friends of the 55th Mass."

I believe this is a worthwhile cause. If I didn't believe in it, I wouldn't make the first donation.

A check is fine, made payable to "Friends of the 55th Mass."

On behalf of 19 soldiers long forgotten, I offer my thanks to each of you.

More From Richard and a donation from Tim Bradshaw

First, let me say I appreciate the very positive responses concerning the historical marker for the 19 soldiers of the 55th Mass. Like myself, you've expressed this is a worthwhile cause for the Depot membership to take on. I wanted to let the rest of you know that Tim Bradshaw (SandHillDigger) has very generously donated 10 copies of his work, "Battery Wagner, The Siege, The Men Who Fought, And the Casualties" to go toward the fund raiser. The work is 249 pages in length, hardcover, and typically sells for more than $30.

Tim stipulated that a copy would go to each of the first 10 donors contributing $100 or more toward the marker. Also, there are no shipping fees, etc. It shows up at your door.

Also this Don Trioni Print of the 55th is being auctioned on the depot Auction, winning bid to go to the Fund
