Two Quarter Eagles Found!By Richard Yanishak found with White's Eagle Spectrum A Top 10 Winner for 2001!
According to the newspaper, this location was an original Boy Scout camp and was used heavily from around 1910 until 1940 when it was abandoned. Yes, all kinds of coins from this time period were unearthed from this site which included barber quarters, standing liberty quarters, barber dimes, mercury dimes, V nickels and buffalo nickels, and Indian head and wheat cents. But I started finding some older coins beyond that time period. Among these were a 1877 seated liberty quarter and a 1865 three cent piece. In March 1998, I found a 1793 Chain Cent, and 2 more badly worn colonial coppers. All these coins were scattered all over the place, and were far beyond the 1900's time frame, and I soon realized this area was once an old field which had a lot of activity along time ago. I kept on going back to this location to detect over the last 4 years because of the variety of coins that were uncovered and I knew this place was just too big to be hunted out. I only detected this place 2 times in 2001. In the early Spring of 2001, I uncovered another old coin which was a 1827 Large Cent in exceptionally fine condition. Then I decided to take another trip to this location on September 5, 2001 and give it another try. After about an hour of detecting with no luck, I decided to check the area along an old stone/rock wall which bordered the camp. I received a 35 VDI signal on my White's Eagle Spectrum at a 6 inch depth. I thought to myself..........yea its another shotgun shell, but I might as well dig it, its deep and ya don't what it is till ya dig. I dug a round plug about 6 inches deep and then I swept my coil over the plug. I thought.....yep its in the plug and started to pick it apart when out popped a little yellow disk. I thought right away it must be some sort of token, then I zoomed my eyes on it and then saw the back of the coin. It was a 1912 Indian head $2 1/2 gold piece. Remarkably, it was a gold coin and words just couldn't describe my emotions at that time, but I looked around and I felt like screaming. I always recheck the holes I dig, and then there was another signal in that hole. This time it read 31.2 and I said to myself.......naw.......can't be. Well guess what? I dug deeper and out popped another Indianhead quarter eagle, this one with a date of 1914-D. What do ya know about that? 2 gold pieces in one hole. Incidentally, it was approximately 50 yards from where I found my 1793 Chain Cent and about 20 yards from the 1827 Large Cent. ANACS graded the 1912 EF-45 and the 1914-D AU-58. I must have rechecked that hole a dozen times since then, but only 2 was in there. You can bet that I dig all the low signals now, and that I will definitely keep on pounding this site in the years to come. Who knows what will pop out next!!! |
