| Welcome
to the Treasure Depot Magazine. We started this online project
because we thought there was a need for a magazine that took an
honest unbiased look at the hobby of metal detecting. Here at the
Depot you will find unedited articles written by hobbyist like
yourself as well as monthly columns by some of the most
knowledgeable people in the field. Inside you will find useful
information, excitement, and humor. What you will not find is the
favoring of any one detector brand nor will you find field tests
of a specific detector. Now and then you may see a certain metal
detector being discussed but you will always hear both it’s
strengths and it’s weaknesses, something you don’t always see
in published field tests.
We believe what makes a good
detectorist is not what machine he or she uses but their
willingness to learn the ins and outs of their particular brand.
Our opinion is that every top of the line model out there performs
basically the same and the difference between being successful and
not is the time you are willing to invest in the hobby. The right
attitude is needed and along with that you need to do research and
spend some time in the field. How many times have you heard a
person with a metal detector say, "I never find
anything" or "all the good stuff is gone." Well
that guy might have the best detector money can buy but it isn’t
going to help him any if it sits in the closest and comes out only
a couple times a year. It takes time to feel confident with a
detector. Once you know the language of your machine and you feel
comfortable with what it’s telling you, your finds will increase
and so will your enjoyment of the hobby.
Another benefit of the hobby is friends. The camaraderie
between detectorist can be strong. They share a love of history
and a desire to link to the past. Any real detectorist will tell
you that this hobby is not about finding great treasures of
monetary value but of the feeling one gets when they dig a coin
that was lost over a hundred years ago or a bullet that was fired
from the musket of a brave civil war soldier. When we step into
the field with our detectors we are somehow transported back in
time and into the past. You can then imagine what it was like back
then, you can almost picture it. Metal Detecting lets us take a
peek into the live of those who lived before us.
This is truly a great hobby but only when it is
experienced as I have discussed. To many times we see this hobby
being commercialized and capitalized upon by people that don’t
even use a metal detector. Politics has its hands on
everything and unfortunately it has found it’s way into this
hobby. We here will do what we can to bring you the best of the
hobby in an unbiased and truthful way.----- JT
