My 2 cents worth is that it depends on the location ...

if I'm at a location that I "know" is old and can hold good old targets I will even dig the iron signals. Many, many times there have been fabulous finds hidden under layers of trash that never would have seen the light of day if the trash wasn't cleaned out. It does obviously take a lot of time and builds stamina :) Now if you are only trying to cherry pick, doing that in a heavy trash area is always going to be close to impossible. In more open areas only you know how much effort you want to put into it. Leaving any week, semi-repeatable, raised tone, iffy signal untouched is taking a risk of passing on a possible great target but obviously has the same chance of being trash. I've heard it said that that's why they call what we do treasure "hunting" and not treasure "finding: :)
