If the dog runs up to the cat very fast the cat takes on a defensive stance with paw in the air and holds his ground. But

the dog usually ignores it and most times has a toy he wants the cat to crab on to and play tug a war. When he continues to shove a toy at the cat the cat just walks off. But if there's no toy and the dog is forceful, the cat will pat the dog once or twice in rapid succession on the nose with claws not extended. I think because of age if it did come to a fight the dog would hurt the cat, not saying the cat would cause some damage but in terms of weight and pure stamina the cat will run away.
